Questions You May Have...

What is Milbon's Liscio Japanese Hair Straightening?

Liscio Thermal Reconditioning is a technique that originated in Japan to make curly, wavy or frizzy hair, straight. The process uses both chemicals and heat to soften the bonds of the hair, reforming the bonds in a straight pattern. The end result is not only perfectly straight hair, but a glossy, smooth, and silky finish that is more healthy than before the process!

How long is the process?

Approximately 2-5 hours. This depends on the condition, length, and density of the hair.

I want to relax my curls, but I don't want it totally straight, is Japanese straightening an option for me?:

Yes. We can do Japanese straightening to reduce frizz and unmanageable curls.

I dye/highlight my hair a lot, can I still get Japanese Straightening? Will my hair fall out?:

Be sure to let us know if you process your hair a lot, we can use a mild Japanese straightening solution on you so we don't damage your hair. If we feel that your hair is too fragile for Japanese Straightening, you may want to try a Keratin Smoothing Treatment

How long does it last?:

It is permanent. As your hair grows, you will see that your roots grow back in at it's natural state (curly). Just be sure to come back every 4-6 months so we can do the Japanese straightening on your roots. In the mean time, you can flat iron your roots as they grow.

Can I wash my hair immediately?:

Make sure you don't wash your hair for 3 days. Also for the first three days: avoid putting it in ponytails, braiding, tucking behind the ears, or doing anything else that will crease the hair. You want the Japanese straightening to really set in the hair.

Will the Japanese straightening make my color fade? How soon can I dye it again?:

Sometimes depending on what kind of hair color you use, the color might fade after the Japanese straightening. Not to worry though, you can re-dye your hair in a week. We do not recommend home coloring and suggest having your hair professionally colored as special precautions need to be taken.

Does Japanese Straightening work on African American hair?:

Yes. Japanese straightening works on all types of hair.

Can Liscio be done over a relaxer?

It cannot be done over hair that has been relaxed with products containing sodium hydroxide or any other metallic hydroxides. However, Liscio is compatible with other thio or cystine based relaxers.

Can it be done on hair that has Henna color?

Liscio cannot be done on hair that has a Henna product or any other metallic dyes or color restorers. If you are unsure about a color you've used in the past, ask your stylist.

How long do I wait to shampoo?

Do not shampoo for 48-72 hours after the Liscio service.

Can I put my hair in a pony tail?

At least 72 hours after the Liscio service, do not put clips, pins, rubber bands, ponytails, or barrettes in the hair. Do not tuck hair behind the ears as well.

How long will the Japanese straightening last?

Once the hair has been thermally reconditioned with Liscio, it will remain straight until it grows out and/or is cut off. New growth generally needs to be redone anywhere from 4-6 months after.

Is all the hair redone when I get the new growth done?

Most times just the new growth is done and the previously done hair is protected with Keratin and protective cream products. If the hair reverts back, solution can be applied for a shorter period of time.

What do I shampoo and condition with at home?

We recommend a variety of Milbon shampoo and conditioners, which we do sell in-store at Glo Salon. We can give you a better recommendation once we have seen your hair and how it reacts to the solution.

How important is it to use the prescribed home care regimen?

Milbon's shampoo and conditioners have been specially formulated to enhance the soft and weightless feel of the hair, as well as maintain the manageability and silky feel. These products are designed to be used with the Liscio service and will maintain your beautiful, straight hairstyle. Because some shampoos and conditioners have adverse effects on the hair after it has been thermally reconditioned, it is very important to follow a strict routine with regard to shampoo and conditioner.

What is the cost?

Generally anywhere from $300-500, depending on hair length, density and if any chemicals are present, as well as the stylists expertise.

Is the cost less for a re-touch application?

Not usually as it takes the same amount of time or sometimes longer, as hair texture may now be different, and the previously processed hair needs to be protected. All hair must still be ironed and neutralized.

Can I swim in a pool or the salt water after?

Do not swim in a chlorinated pool or salt water for at least two weeks after your Liscio straightening. Also, you should avoid extensive sun exposure during this time.

Can Japanese Straightening be done on a pregnant woman?

No, it is not recommended. We all know that during pregnancy a woman is passing through major hormonal changes. These changes affect the structure of the hair and its growth rate. During pregnancy, hair colors do not last as long and chemicals substances may have the strangest effects. You just never know how your hair will react! Instead of a making your hair silky and straight as advertised, thermal reconditioning during pregnancy can transform it into a ball of frizz. This is not always the case, but the bottom line is: you can never know! Additionally, the hair tends to grow much faster during pregnancy due to the high levels of estrogen in the woman's body. Even if the thermal reconditioning goes great and your hair looks straight and fabulous, it will grow too fast and you'll have to repeat the procedure much sooner than expected!

What type of maintenance will I need to do at home?

The Liscio system will leave your hair smooth, and silky straight with little styling required. However, we do recommend blow drying the hair using a natural bristle brush and a downward drying motion to close the cuticle, and retain moisture in the hair.

What information do I need to disclose to my stylist before having the Liscio straightening service performed?

You will want to tell your stylist about any color, perms, previous relaxers or other chemical services you have had done or performed in the past. It is important to tell your stylist, even if you can not still see the effect of the previous service or think it has grown out. You will also want to advise your stylist of any scalp conditions, irritations, abrasions and/or allergies.

After Care Instructions...

Do Not
-Do not shampoo hair for THREE DAYS (72 hours).
-Avoid getting any moisture in hair during the 72 hours (water, sweat, etc).
-When showering during the 72 hour period, carefully pull hair away from face with a silk scarf or shower cap, making sure not to dent the hair, or simply, take a bath instead.
-If hair gets wet, blow dry immediately and go over area with a flat iron on a low
temperature.
- DO NOT use pins, clips, hair ties, sunglasses, or do anything that may crease the hair during the 72 hour period. This can leave unwanted impressions in the hair.
-Do not color your hair for two weeks before or after receiving this service.

Do
-Use an appropriate shampoo and conditioner. We recommend the Milbon Nigelle ER or Milbon Inphenom shampoo and conditioner. They are by the same brand as the Japanese straightener that we use and are highly recommended to keep your hair hydrated and healthy after this chemical process.
-Wear your hair down for the 72 hour period.
-You may style your hair with heat (blow dryer, round brush, flat iron).
-If you go swimming (after the initial 72 hour period) in the ocean or a chlorinated pool, rinse hair with fresh water and apply a leave in conditioner prior to swimming to protect the hair from absorbing the salt and chlorine. After swimming, we suggest that you rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water to eliminate any salt or chlorine build-up.
-We offer a Nigelle HY deep conditioning treatment that you may get every 5 weeks in salon which adds moisture, shine, and manageability to your hair after receiving the Japanese straightening.

After the initial 72 hour period, you may wash your hair with the approved shampoo and conditioner and treat your hair as normal. You may use hair ties, pins, etc. You may still use all of your current styling products, providing they are sodium chloride free (most are). You will find that your hair silky smooth, super straight,  and gorgeous! Enjoy!
